Why does tequila feel different from other alcohol? Let’s start with the stereotypes or caricatures we told each other at the college parties. Wine makes you slow and weepy. Whisky makes you philosophize. Gin makes you sad. Rum turns you into a pirate. And so on. But what is it about tequila that seems to get people going? Maybe even seem like it gives you energy. Is tequila a stimulant?

To get to the answer of that question, we have to understand ethanol (ETH). Basically the thing in any alcohol that gives you the buzz. And that’s right, it is always ethanol. Wine buzz? Ethanol. Beer buzz? Ethanol. Tequila buzz? It, too, comes from ethanol.

So why all the spontaneous dancing and bad karaoke? It comes down to the power of suggestion.

Is Tequila a Stimulant to Your Brain?

So, when you take a shot of tequila, ethanol floods your bloodstream. And it doesn’t work like Red Bull once it gets there. It does the opposite. Ethanol always enhances the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which slows down brain activity and makes you feel relaxed. Always. Whether the ethanol you are getting comes from Agave or hops. That’s why alcohol is classified as a depressant.

So why do you feel like tearing up the dance floor after a few shots of tequila? It comes down to environment.

Why Tequila Feels Like a Stimulant

It’s a paradox, isn’t it? Alcohol depresses your central nervous system, yet you feel more energized. Remember, along with slowing down your brain activity, it also shuts down your prefrontal cortex. What does that do? It makes you act stupid. Or should we say, it makes you act without inhibitions. Self-control and good decisions are both put on standby mode when you drink tequila.

You feel confident and sociable. But where are you? What environments are you more likely to drink tequila? Probably in places that have conga lines or dance moves.  With its quick-hit drinking style and festive associations, it can feel a bit like a stimulant to some.

Alcohol That Acts Like a Stimulant

Is tequila a stimulant? No. But there’s a reason people lump it into that category. It’s that old dopamine hit again. In moderate doses, alcohol releases dopamine— the same chemical that lights up when you eat chocolate, fall in love, or get likes on social media.

This dopamine rush can make you feel euphoric, energetic, and yes, a little invincible. The dangerous part about all of this is that the brain begins to associate drinking with reward and pleasure, and over time, you may find yourself chasing that buzz with increasing frequency. And tequila isn’t the only culprit. Any alcohol, when consumed in certain settings or quantities, can mimic this stimulant-like effect.

The Dangers of Drinking Too Much Tequila

Tequila, and any alcohol of course, has its dark side. The same fire that makes you feel alive can quickly turn into a blaze that’s hard to control. Binge drinking—defined as consuming five or more drinks in a short period—can lead to all sorts of trouble.

Think blackouts, risky behavior, alcohol poisoning, and long-term health issues like liver damage and heart disease. Addiction is also a very strong possibility. When a person binge drinks on a regular basis, they may develop an inability to control their drinking (even if/when it causes them personal harm).

This is when those party shots turn into something more insidious, characterized by how alcohol rewires your brain, making it nearly impossible to stop, and may even require an alcohol rehab.

Signs You Might Be Drinking Too Much Tequila:

  • You find it hard to stop after one or two drinks.
  • Drinking has started to interfere with your work, relationships, or health.
  • You’ve experienced blackouts or memory gaps after drinking.
  • You rely on alcohol to relax, socialize, or cope with stress.
  • Friends or family have expressed concern about your drinking habits.

If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to take a closer look at your relationship with alcohol. And that’s not about judgment—it’s about self-awareness and care.

Binge Drinking and Alcohol Use Disorder

Tequila, like all alcohol, has a seductive charm. But when the fun wears off and the hangovers get longer, it’s worth asking: is this still working for me? Binge drinking isn’t just a college rite of passage—it’s a serious health risk.

And alcohol use disorder doesn’t look like it does in the movies. It’s not always rock bottom or dramatic interventions. Sometimes, it’s subtle—missed opportunities, strained relationships, or that nagging feeling that something isn’t quite right. The good news? Help is available, and recovery is possible. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
